Blind SA is looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and motivated individual to take up the position of Development Officer at Blind SA National Office in Johannesburg. The successful incumbent will be expected to travel to Blind SA Member Organisations in various parts of South Africa.
Job Summary
- To Oversee that Member Organisations administration and reporting is undertaken in keeping with Blind SA Constitution, Compliance and NPO Office Compliance.
- To facilitate and arrange Member Organisation liaison and capacity building programmes.
- To oversee media activities as Public Relations Programmes by Member Organisations for circulation and publication in Blind SA and in the media.
- To undertake the necessary administration and Reporting for this portfolio to the designated personnel at Blind SA.
- To undertake other tasks and duties that may be allocated by the CEO or designated personnel from time to time.
Requirements
- Qualification in development work, community development work, or social work.
- Computer literate and knowledge in MS Office suite
- Valid driver’s license – This provision will not be required for visually impaired applicants.
- Good written and verbal communication skills and must be able to communicate in at least two Indigenous African languages.
- Good coordination and organising ability.
- Ability to work in a team and to work independently with limited supervision.
- Proven track experience with at least three years’ experience in working with NPO’s or Cooperatives.

Job Purpose:

Job Tasks and Duties.
- Member Organisations liaison and capacity building programmes.
1.1 Member Organisation Governance and Administration.
1.1.1 Member Organisation administration.
- a) Facilitate the establishment of new Member Organisations.
- b) To assist the new Member Organisation to submit the application for NPO registration and to follow up on progress.
- c) To maintain a physical and electronic Member Organisation and members Membership database at the Head Office and to forward Membership Cards to all members.
1.1.2 Compliance:
- a) To obtain from Member Organisations by the due date the List of members and file at the Head Office.
- b) To obtain the Annual Narrative AGM Report from the Member Organisations by the due date and to submit to the PA for circulation to the General Assembly.
- c) To obtain the Annual Financial Statement/Report from the Member Organisations by the due date and to submit to the Finance Office
1.1.3 To be responsible to finalize the documentation necessary and to submit the Annual submission of approved reports and amended constitution from the Member Organisation to the NPO Office.
1.2 To facilitate and arrange Capacity Building Programmes for the Member Organisations.
1.2.1 Empowerment of the Member Organisation by facilitating and arranging Capacity Building Workshops for the following:
- Training in General leadership and empowerment
- Training in roles and responsibilities for Governance office bearers
- Training in narrative Report writing
- Training in advocacy and campaign developments
- Training in Financial management and reporting
- Training in fundraising and resource generation
1.3 Provincial Coordination.
1.3.1 Facilitating and assisting Member Organisations in a Province to set up and coordinate a Provincial structure of Blind SA in that Province.
- Public Relations.
2.1 To liaise with Member Organisations in obtaining news, articles and interviews of events and activities of Member Organisations for:
- Blind SA Newsletter and magazines
- social media
- Traditional media (newspapers, radio, and television)
- Administration.
- Responsible for all administration and filing required to coordinate and manage this portfolio.
- Responsible for all assets, inventories, and consumables allocated to this portfolio.
- Responsible for all fulfillment (thank you correspondence and tokens) that are assigned from this portfolio.
- Submit accurate monthly, quarterly, annual and project reports as required by assigned due dates.
- Comply with all Blind SA policies and procedures.
- Enter into a performance management agreement and to review, and monitor improvements and adherence to the performance agreement.
- General.

As the Fundraising & Communications Officer, you will be responsible for the fundraising and maximizing revenue for BLIND SA from all income streams to achieve the fundraising targets by providing effective communication, administration and research. You will also support the Fundraising Team and deliver the overall marketing and communications strategy for the organization, as well as having the opportunity to develop and manage your own projects. We’re looking for someone who has experience in a fundraising environment and has an understanding of marketing. You will relish this varied role, be highly organized and be committed to the work of BLIND SA.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
The successful candidate will be an excellent Fundraiser, marketer, researcher, organizer and communicator who will relish this varied role in a fundraising and marketing environment, whilst being able to deal with competing priorities and working collaboratively with the other member of the fundraising & communication team
KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Developing and delivering integrated communications campaigns across PR, advertising, direct marketing, digital and social media of Blind SA.
- Create and produce promotional and awareness-raising tools such as videos, social media posts, and campaigns, websites, donor stories, posters, media advertisements, radio scripts, briefs, reports, letters, fact sheets, brochures, pamphlets, blogs, etc.
- Writing press releases, organizing press calls, responding to media inquiries
- Maintaining and growing the Blind SA supporter database
- Overseeing the design, copy-writing, and production, of all print material
- Maintaining database photos, case studies, and research/evidence to promote Blind SA Work
- Creates and executes unique, engaging, multi-faceted marketing plans and strategies for Braille production, Braille training, assistive devices, in coordination with the CEO.
- Supporting a range of fundraising events – whether our own events or external fundraising initiatives
- Recruiting and managing a network of volunteer fundraisers
- Building effective proposals and delivering compelling presentations to potential funders
- Responding to general inquiries and acknowledging one-off donations
- Other ad hoc duties when required
Minimum Qualifications and Experience Required:
- Driver licence a MUST and willing to travel. A driver's licence is not required if the applicant is blind or partially sighted.
- Relevant degree or diploma, three to five years’ experience in non-profit, communications and fundraising and marketing or similar role.
- Demonstrable experience in research, analysis of information and an effective presentation of it.
- Exceptional organizational skills with experience in managing multiple tasks and prioritizing effectively.
- A hands-on approach and can-do attitude.
- Accuracy and excellent attention to detail.
- A good communicator with the ability to build relationships with a variety of people.
- Excellent interpersonal and team working skills, with an ability to work independently and seize opportunities.
- High level of analytical and written skill – fluent in written and spoken English with strong presentation and persuasion skills.
- Computer literate and confident using all MS Office software and databases
- Familiarity with major social media platforms

Duties and Tasks
1 Public Relations.
Respond to public enquiries by referring it to the relevant personnel.
Advise the management on strategies to maintain a positive public image of Blind SA.
2 Media and Communication.
Drafting, circulation and facilitating media articles, statements and interviews for radio, television, newspapers, magazines, digital media, social media and for the website in accordance with Blind SA policies and procedures.
Maintaining and improving the media database.
Managing and maintaining a media and photographic archive of all media, public relations and fundraising articles, photographs, audio, electronic and digital recordings and clippings.
Developing a strategy and implementation plan for Blind SA in respect of: - Managing
2.1 Traditional media.
2.2 Digital media.
2.3 Social media (Facebook, twitter, Instagram).
2.4 Web site.
3 Marketing.
Develop a strategic and implementation plan to market and make Blind SA more visible within the public sector, private sector, and the general public.
Market Braille Services so as to increase the sales in braille and daisy material.
Market and be responsible for the sales of Assistive Devices, specifically the Tatrapoint, Braille Me and Mali-Bhala.
4 Fundraising.
Develop a strategy and implementation plan to raise funds for projects and programmes of Blind SA from the public sector (government, SoE’s, parastatal) and private sector (SMME’s, corporate, trusts, and foundations) from within South Africa and from international sources.
Develop and coordinate an Endowment Fund and a bequest programme for Blind SA.
5 Administration.
